By Guest Blogger Riley, assisted by Martha Sessums

Doggone it. I can’t believe how fast April has arrived. And April means that it’s National Poetry Month.

Hi. Riley here. April also means that I get to announce the Third Annual ACE Poetry Contest. I’m also the Main Mascot of the ACE Poetry Contest, which means I earn lots of treats.

This year there are four ACE Partner Schools entering the contest. There’s the original school, Alpha: Blanca Alvarado Middle School, plus Alpha’s newest member – Alpha: José Hernández Middle School. And of course San Francisco International High School and Oakland International High School will participate.

The International Highs will have mascots representing their schools for the ACE Poetry Contest, and we’ll all be writing poems and other cool stuff this month. Lobo will return, and I hear that one mascot will be a cat. That’s cool. I like to chase play with cats.

Let me highlight the contest. The topic is the same as always: “Learning With Technology.” No, dudes, it’s not a boring topic. Technology changes all the time, and schools are on the edge of it all. Ever heard of mobile?

The poetry type is any, and all, even slam or motion. See, Motion Poems. Tech meets poetry. Each school will run the contest and judge the winners, with the contest over on April 30. Winners will be announced after that date.

What do the winners win? At each school, first place winners will receive $75, second place wins $50 and those on third receive $25. The prizes will be in the form of credit card gift cards, so you can spend the money on what you want. (Maybe treats for me??)

All the winner’s poems will be posted here, on the ACE Spectrum blog, plus the National Poetry Month blog and on appropriate social media, like Twitter and Facebook.

And don’t forget that April 30 is Poem in Your Pocket Day, the day when you can read poems to your friends and they gotta like it. But they should like poetry every day, cause it’s pretty cool.

Hope everyone has fun with the contest! Good luck to all the creative poets out there. And don’t forget to sign up for the ACE Spectrum blog, which will tell you when your Poetry Mascots have written poems. I like to write doggerel. I wonder if there is a poetry form called catterel?
