Burton High School Students Start Their Summer Internship at KALW

By Guest Blogger Julie Caine, Senior Producer, Crosscurrents, KALW 91.7 FM

This summer we’re very happy to welcome Jeannie Doan and Lawrence Chan as our Burton High School interns at KALW.

They’re working with us on all aspects of production on Crosscurrents – from research, to engineering to doing voiceovers. In addition to working with me, they’re each partnered with a staff reporter to get individual mentorship during their internship.

Mentors are taking the lead role in helping Jeannie and Lawrence develop and produce commentary pieces for broadcast.

Both Jeannie and Lawrence are in the AOIT (Academy of Information Technology) at Burton. I met them while doing class visits in the spring semester, and worked with them briefly when they came to do a KALW tour with their classes.

Jeannie says she’s most excited about recording sounds and working with Pro Tools. She’s interested in a career in art and technology, and thinks this internship will help give her experience that can help her think more about that.

Lawrence says he’s interested in engineering, sound board work, and interviewing people. He’s also interested in exploring different career fields before he decides on a major for college.

Stay tuned as Jeannie and Lawrence report on their KALW Internship adventure this summer.
