Cheers for Yew Chung poets!

Cheers for Yew Chung poets!

Poetry is just like the characteristics of this Year of the Monkey. It can be intelligent, dignified, romantic, quick-witted, agile, curious, and inspire motivation. And that’s a perfect description of our winners of the ACE Poetry Contest.

The teachers and staff (and me too!) are very proud of our students’ work. There were many well-written and creative poems, and our students had a great time with this contest! Who knew writing poetry about learning with technology could be so much fun. Ooh-ooh ah-ah!

And the Yew Chung International School winners of the ACE Poetry Contest are:

FIRST PLACE

Learning with Technology

By Vienna Zhang, 4th Grade

The Generation of Technology,
The Generation of Advance.
That’s the 21st Century,
When Steve Jobs’ inventions were a fad.

Apple, Samsung, Google and lots more,
We get all excited as their inventions start to pour.

As we use it in learning,
It helps us a lot,
But they could improve,
Even though they’ve got shots.

Like the cameras on Apple’s tablets,
When you take a picture
Maybe move to the left,
The whole photo’s blurred.
Can’t take anything fast that occurs.

It could get complicated and not as fab,
Especially sometimes when you lose an important tab.
People can’t always remember to press Command+Shift+T,
So what happens to them when they’re brains aren’t “techy”.

Maybe when learning with a SmartBoard,
What happens then?
As we wait for it to load
In our terrific math class.
Waiting and waiting,
There! It’s done loading!
But as one steps on the wire,
It lags out.

But yes it is useful,
How it can help,
Maybe using ShowMe or iMovie
When presenting in class.

Lots of events,
Time flies,
Look,
I’m not using a notebook!

In self-driving cars,
And doing your homework,
Your mom no longer needs to drive,
How marvelous,
She could be reading her cookbook,
And getting cool ideas on how to make you
Sweet,
Tasty,
Dinner.

Learning with technology,
As it changes our lives.

SECOND PLACE

The Mouse on Computers (your great pet)

By Max Polosky, 4th Grade

It scurries along
Your wooden table
Making little squeeks
And click.
It lies next
To your computer
Connected by the tail.
It’s blind,
But doesn’t
Complain
About your constant rubbing.
Actually,
It loves it.
The more you
Rub,
The more
Your pet mouse
Loves
You.
So please
Take care of your mouse.

THIRD PLACE

Learning With Technology

By Ethan Zhao, 3rd Grade

Note: games= educational games

Technology helps us learn.
Even makes it fun.
Controlling all the keys and clicks.
Hovering over the keyboard.
No one gets tired of it.
On the phone all day playing all these games.
Laughing at the screen.
Oh my gosh,
Get the mechanic!!!!!!
You and me all like it.

Rolling away into games.
Only the best qualify for my test.
Crouching on my chair.
Kool like Citron.
So you try it too!!

“Love poetry, love life,” says Marisol Osorio, the first place winner of the ACE Poetry Contest. Hooowwwllling good! That’s me too, except that I would add “Love treats!” But I’m a dog and I have to add that.

The first winners from the Alpha Public Schools have been chosen and the students loved getting their prizes. One said it felt like Christmas, which is cool. That holiday is a time of giving, and the students gave us great poetry and ACE gave them awards. Winners everywhere. And more to come from the other Alpha Public Schools. Stay tuned.

So here are the winners from Alpha: Blanca Alvarado Middle School.

FIRST PLACE

Technology

By Marisol Osorio, Eight Grade

Technology, death of humanity
It’s poison within all our daily lives
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Musicly
Cutting us apart with the sharpest of knives

How great was it all in the beginning?
It brought us beyond the stars, to the moon
When terror struck, all we thought was winning
And it was then when we sealed out doom

We ignore each other, and we’re standing right there
Walk straight off a cliff, we wouldn’t know it
It’s cellphones, laptops, devices beware
Because one day we’ll surely pay for it

Just think today while you’re all soft and snug
That outside is better, so try and unplug

Note about Mariso – Her real joy is photography (she can take photos of me for next year’s contest!) School is a top priority right now because she wants to get into Stanford. Arf!

SECOND PLACE

Learning Technology

By Cindy Tran, Eight Grade

Biology zoology
Technology.
From our TV to our digital screens.
To the media and the latest dreams.
From the drones to our motive to stay at home.
Can’t you see what society has become?
From the latest trends to followers
To social trends and collaborators
Although it has its goods and bads
Technology is all we’ve had.

Technology.
It is the new era of humanity’s development
It has opened new doors to knowledge & bright futures
Communication. Education. Inventions.
Technology is why we can watch videos,
From the comfort of our own home.
It is why we can express our laziness.
Why we have Amazon Shipping, and
Why we can see face to face through a screen
From ebooks and audiobooks and documentaries
Technology has made us evolve and change
Our society, technology is apparently helping
All people worldwide

Technology, ‘tis why we can learn with ease
Like ebooks, audiobooks to videos.
Like we’ve all heard, the options are infinite.
Who knows what waits for us in the future?
‘Tis the global change for humanity’s development.

I so want to be an anime dog! My name would be Treats 'cause that's the word that captures my attention best.

I so want to be an anime dog! My name would be Treats ’cause that’s the word that captures my attention best.

Note about Cindy – she’s an otaku anime girl. Anime is my favorite too because the dogs are so cute and cool. From Ein the “data dog” of the Bebop crew, to Riza’s Black Hayate, these dogs are loyal to their masters, like me. Hear that John! (I know that’s going to earn me a treat.) Arf! Arf!

THIRD PLACE

The “Perfect” Person

By Arianna Aguilar, Sixth Grade

It is an amazing thing but hurts so many;
Technology is one of the best things ever invented
But some people use it to say bad things about each other;
Some people just take the hating too far;
Some people don’t worry about other people’s feelings;

Some people want to be like that person on the cover of the magazine,
Some of those people almost die trying to look like the people on the cover;
Some people are the people that tell other people that they have to look like that;
But why?
Why do people have to do that?
Don’t listen they are talking nonsense;
If you do listen then you are going to become what they think you are

Some people don’t know the definition of perfect;
But the truth is nobody is perfect not even the person on the magazine cover
Everybody has flaws and everybody makes mistakes
Some say that perfect is skinny or strong
But one day you will learn that the reality is that
Absolutely no one on the face of the Earth is “perfect”

One day you will open your eyes and see that inside,
You are incredible and awesome;
One day you will see your true self and not care
What the front cover of the magazine looks like
One day the world will not care what you look like
Only about how big your heart is
But always remember that the heart and what is
On the inside is the most important part of the person

Note about Arianna: She likes every subject, but math and poetry are faves. I bet she would like to write poetry with Louis of One Direction. As he wrote on their new album, “If you like doing whatever you’ve been dreaming about, baby you’re perfect.” Dream on Arianna! Arf! Arf! Arf!

Alex, Ermias and Joshua – our winners for this year’s poetry contest.

Alex, Ermias and Joshua – our winners for this year’s poetry contest.

Hello World!

Poetry Month has (sadly) come to a close and it’s time to announce the winners of the ACE Poetry Contest at SF International High School.

We had many wonderful submissions this year, but in the end with winners are Alex Sorto, Ermias Kidane and Joshua Ruvalcaba-Garcia.

FIRST PLACE:

Untitled (everyday, every month)
By Alex Sorto

I don’t know what to do
So I take out my phone and go to google

All the boys are playing
with their phones
If you don’t have one
you live on stones

I wrote this poem
using technology
If you want to know about self-esteem
you research psychology

Right now this is in our daily life,
in every minute
You can use it to spread your word
and don’t be mute

Everyday, every month
and every hour
Tablet, laptop, computer,
this technology is ours

Helping ourselves
and helping others
You want to succeed
read book on your phone

When I want to be romantic
I send an emoji flower

Congratulations to my SFIHS Poetry Rock Stars!

Congratulations to my SFIHS Poetry Rock Stars!

SECOND PLACE:

Tap Tap
By Ermias Kidane

Tap, tap on your little device
Do you wish to hear my insightful advice?

Look up
Not down

Throw your phone
away

Don’t you know you don’t need it
Today?

Appreciate the yellows,
Greens and blues

Mother nature
Won’t mind if use you her bed for a snooze

THIRD PLACE:

Technology
By Joshua Ruvalcaba-Garcia

Technology
People get happy when they but their
new android
They say technology connects
us together
That’s funny because that’s the kind of people
who you avoid
They do not take a moment
to look at the weather
They just type on their iPhones
covered in feathers
I’m still glad
technology exists
Buy games and watching videos is something
I can’t resist
Where people argue against atheists
Social media looks controlled by only priests
Technology is the knife that cuts
from both sides
But still is a big
web tied
Only for people who can’t see
the bright side
They get trapped on
their device
The screen doesn’t let them see
the other side
Then, they die
without pride
